Strengthening breast cancer systems through research, equity, and innovation
The Institute of Breast Disease, Kolkata (IBDK) is a non-profit organisation working to improve breast cancer outcomes in India and other low- and middle-income countries.
Breast cancer is now the most common cancer among Indian women, yet delays in diagnosis, fragmented care, lack of standardised protocols, and unaffordable treatment continue to drive preventable poor outcomes.
IBDK was founded to address these systemic gaps. Our work is rooted in the belief that cancer care should be guided by evidence, equity, and dignity — not by geography, income, or access.
Rather than operating as a charity-only model, we focus on rigorous research, scalable solutions, and system-level interventions. Our approach integrates early detection, navigation, training, and innovation to strengthen breast cancer care across resource-constrained settings.

Dr. Soumen Das
Founder & Director, Institute of Breast Disease
Cancer should never be a verdict written by one's poverty or postcode. Yet, for millions in low- and middle-income countries, the barriers of cost and access remain as lethal as the disease itself.
Every individual — regardless of geography, income, or social standing — deserves the dignity of timely, quality care.
The Institute of Breast Disease, Kolkata (IBDK) was born from this conviction. We exist to challenge the systemic disparities that define cancer care in LMICs and to develop solutions forged in the crucible of resource constraints.
History has shown that innovation emerging from scarcity often sets the standard for progress. We hope the answers we discover here can change the trajectory of cancer care everywhere.
